HAJMT WINS Community Initiative and Partnership Award

Sally, the founder and chairman of the Henry Angell-James Memorial Trust, won an award!

“On behalf of West Midlands Ambulance Service, I would like to thank you for your support and dedication” wrote Anthony C. Marsh, Chief Executive Officer to Sally who won The Community Initiative and Partnership Award “for your generous donations of AED equipment within our communities”.

Due to the current situation with Covid, this year’s Excellence in the Community Awards ceremony was held virtually on 15th September. This event was held to honour members of the public from across the West Midlands region who have gone beyond the call of duty to help save lives and support the work of West Midlands Ambulance Service’s 4,500 staff.

It is a great opportunity for the West Midlands Ambulance Trust to recognise the efforts of Community First Responders, St John Ambulance, other emergency services and other voluntary organisations, businesses and individuals. The work that all of these people do ensures better patient outcomes and saving more lives.

  • High On A Hill For This HAJMT AED

High On A Hill For This HAJMT AED

Meet Year 1 and Year 2 of Clive CE Primary School and Nursery, Shropshire.

We are delighted to have recently donated one of our AEDs to the school whose core values are Respect, Responsibility & Resilience. The school is unique in many ways– not least because there is limited vehicular access, great because it means that all the children and staff get a walk to school every day. It is also safer as there are few, if any, vehicles near the school gate at drop off and home times.

However, its location also brings challenges. Clive CE Primary School and Nursery is situated halfway up Grinshill Hill— a popular place for walkers and bikers, even more so during lockdown. Needless to say, the trustees unanimously approved the application for a HAJMT AED to be installed at the school. A perfect and important location to serve those that live in the community and those that are are lucky enough to visit it.

  • An Ideal Spot For A HAJMT AED

An Ideal Spot For A HAJMT AED

The ideal spot for a HAJMT AED, the village hall at the heart of the community. Bill Rollo, Chairman of the Parish Council of the village of Weston-under-Redcastle in North Shropshire is seen here with Sally A-J and the village’s newly installed HAJMT AED.

The village of Weston-under-Redcastle was keen to apply for an AED as the area is populated with retired people as well as many visitors who enjoy walking and cycling around the stunning countryside.  The village is also at the entrance of the Grade 1 heritage site of Hawkstone Park Follies with its dramatic landscape including gullies, caves, towers and bridges. Hawkstone Hotel is also nearby, which has two 18 hole golf courses, and in the winter provides a significant tourist attraction with Santa Claus opening his grotto at Christmas.

Weston-under-Redcastle  holds a major annual show attended by many thousands each year, yet Weston still has that lovely typical feel of a small country English village.

Opus Land & IAS Continues Support of HAJMT

Richard Smith is joint MD of Opus Land, an established real estate company with a successful track record of developing and investing in property across the UK for over 20 years. Richard is pictured here with his HAJMT AED in the Opus Land offices in Henley-in-Arden in Solihull. Opus Land is  one of the first members of the Industrial Agents Society to install a HAJMT AED and continues to champion the cause.

Did you know that the HAJMT has had huge support from the Industrial Agents Society (IAS) from the get-go?  Due to this relationship, a number of commercial agents have now committed to install HAJMT AEDs in their sites around the country.  For each AED installed, the organisation makes a donation that helps us to buy more AEDs for those communities in need and we are hugely grateful.  We only hope that this will grow.

Commerical agents such as Chancerygate, Caisson Investment Management, Barwood Capital, Big Yellow Self Storage, Kier, Opus Land and Graftongate have supported us and now HAJMT AED’ss are spread around the country, from the West Midlands and beyond. We thank you all for your continued, and potentially life saving support. Let’s see how many more we can get installed in 2022!

  • UK PADsites & Russell Brooks

    UK PADsites & Russell Brooks

Meet Russell Brooks. Russell is founder of UK PADsites, a specialist supplier  of Public Access Defibrillators (PAD) based in Newport, Shropshire. Russell is also supplier of the HAMJT AEDs.

Russell started the company four years ago frustrated at mainstream PADs only available at exorbitant prices. He felt strongly that it was morally wrong, particularly for the many small communities around the country to be priced out of a life saving piece of equipment that did not need to be so expensive.

Russell, originally from Albrighton, Shropshire, has had a long career in the public health sector. Beginning at  the Red Cross and then moving on to St. John Ambulance before working for the Shropshire Ambulance Service which later became the West Midlands Ambulance Service. Russell is the co-ordinator for Newport Community First Responders Scheme having been a Community Response Coordinator for over 21 years.

As a certified instructor with the British Heart Foundation’s Heartstart scheme, Russel is able to teach recipients of AEDs emergency life saving skills.  He can also teach communities these same life saving skills– class sizes are restricted only by the size of the room and whatever Covid guidelines are recommended for your choice of venue.

If you would like to purchase an AED for your community or to organise a training session, please feel free to contact Russell at russellbrooks@aol.com.

If your community is not able to purchase an AED outright, dirctly from Russell, please apply for one from our charity HAJMT. Follow the application links on the menu.

  • Community Focused & Team Effort

    Community Focused & Team Effort

Laura and Linda Wyke and Philip Knott together with Sally at Leo Farm in Benthall, Shropshire.

Benthall is a small rural village, near Broseley, which lies on the right bank of the Severn River facing the town of Ironbridge. The village is home to about 300 residents, most of whom are elderly, and the area gets a lot of visitors at all times of the year thanks to the beautiful @BenthallNT, a National Trust property nearby. The area also attracts walkers, cyclists and runners who have over 40 routes in the area to choose from according to @ordnancesurvey.

Leo Farm, located in the centre of the village, is also a Caravan and Motorhome Club Certificated Location, which accepts just five caravans or motorhomes and is for Club Members only.

Our decision to donate an AED to the village was an easy one to make and installing it turned into a community project. A ‘trench’ party was formed to install the electrics to the AED just outside Leo Farm in the centre of the village. The digging party included Nigel Wyke, Nick Downes (seen in the second photo) and his sister Myra with biscuits supplied by Laura Wyke.  Mike McGowan from Graeburn Electrics kindly installed the AED. According to Sally “It was a real community effort” and we couldn’t be happier that they have received one of our AED’s.
